jining art district masterplan
The art related architectures are mostly solitary buildings, and as such placed in a slowly sloping hillside towards the water. The esplanade connects them as it widens and narrows during its progression, forming different urban situations that invite to rest or to stroll.
The commercial backbone features more narrow continuations of the wider gaps between the art buildings, allowing passerbies to traverse through through the site.
The final architectures will be designed by RSAA, Mario Botta, He JingTang and Ryue Nishizawa.
The city of Jining - birthplace of Confucius - is currently developing a new art district, featuring a library, art gallery, museum and an event and art center. A commercial backbone is also in planning, to complement the ensemble.
The site is adjacent to a big lake, but completelly cut off from its surroundings through wide streets.
This winning proposal for the masterplan aims to visually connect the lake to the district, by raising the pedestrian level up to +6m. A central spine is going to run from north to south, seperating and connecting the commercial part in the east, and the art buildings in the west.
It gets punctually connected with the pedestrian level, with the option to offer additional program around those courtyards, or to use them as purely passive spaces that allow for bigger trees to take root, which in turn allows the passerbys to walk between the treetops.
The area under the esplanade serves as logistics level, where parking, delivery and technical functions are located.
